How far does Catholic obedience go? What happens when those in authority undermine the Faith they are duty-bound to protect? Michael Matt takes the Vatican’s latest treatment of Bishop Athanasius Schneider and the Latin Mass as the starting point for asking the million-dollar question: Where is your line in the sand?
If you think disobedience to the Vatican is impossible, then you must have missed plenty of prelates doing just that and remaining in “good standing”.
From Bishops Schneider and Strickland to the entire African Bishops Conference, resistance to the Synodal agenda and recent papal encyclicals is gathering steam.
And why not? When from St. Paul in the Gospel, to Our Lady’s prophecies at La Salette and Fatima, to the warnings of Sr. Lucia and Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich, Heaven has always prepped us to allow for a time when false prophets will arise and even the elect will be deceived…
So, answer this: Can there ever come a time when obedience itself becomes a betrayal of truth? And if that time comes, what does Christ expect of us?

Why is Pope Leo XIV teaching Gaudium et Spes? And what does this Vatican II document have to do with “the care of water,” synodality, the Communist Bishop Helder Câmara, Klaus Schwab and the continuing war against Tradition?
In this episode of The Remnant Underground, Michael Matt examines Pope Leo’s September prayer intention for “the care of water” and his catechetical series on the documents of Vatican II, particularly Gaudium et Spes.
Michael explores the criticisms of Bishop Athanasius Schneider, Msgr. Brunero Gherardini and others who have warned that the document placed excessive emphasis on temporal human concerns at the expense of the Church’s supernatural mission.
He also examines the controversial role of Bishop Helder Câmara, the Catacombs Pact, and how they connect Vatican II, Synodality and the postconciliar transformation of the Catholic Church.
And then there is the SSPX.
Why does the Vatican continue to fight the movement associated with Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre while so many other movements and ideologies find welcome within the Catholic Church?
Michael's answer is blunt: The issue is never the issue. The issue is ALWAYS the Revolution.

Meet the grand-nephew of Emperor Karl -- Archduke Eduard Habsburg of Austria who will tell the true story of his uncle, the last Catholic king of Europe, and his noble attempt to save us all from a Christophobic New World Order -- an attempt for which the Emperor was banished and would eventually die a martyr's death in exile.
Blessed Karl of Austria, Pray for us.

What happened to Catholic belief?
When Catholics can casually declare that someone who never received the Sacraments and never entered the Church is certainly in heaven, it’s worth asking whether the Faith we inherited is being replaced by something else entirely.
And now Pope Leo is warning Catholics not to “retreat into our own convictions and religious certainties.”
But what if “religious certainty” is exactly what Catholics desperately need?
Jesus said He is the way, the truth and the life. He established a Church. He commanded us to keep His commandments. Those are religious certainties!
And the Pope would have us move beyond that…
Michael Matt looks past the Dolly Parton headlines to the quiet but deadly crisis of faith, as evidenced by Catholic priests and prelates trotting out Universal Salvationism and celebrating a lack of conviction.
The result? Catholics suddenly find themselves members of a Church of “Religious Uncertainty”.
But before the show ends, Michael introduces someone who puts all of these arguments into perspective: little Lucy, his granddaughter.
Her life has taught her family something the sophisticated world desperately needs to remember about suffering, selflessness, the sacredness of human life and the face of Jesus.
Watch to the end. And please pray for Lucy.

Why does the Vatican appear willing to tolerate bishops appointed by Communist China without a papal mandate while taking increasingly severe action against Traditional Catholic bishops of the SSPX?
Michael Matt examines this contradiction alongside a series of developments affecting Traditional Catholics: reported restrictions on the Traditional Latin Mass in Seattle and Pittsburgh, new pressure against the TLM in England, and the Vatican’s apparent silence over Catholic politicians who openly support abortion.
Again: Why are Traditional Catholics being treated as the problem while openly hostile forces within and outside the Church seem to receive a very different response?
Matt also discusses Bishop Athanasius Schneider’s powerful intervention in the SSPX controversy and what these developments may mean for the future of the Traditional Catholic movement.
Topics covered:
• Communist China and the state-backed appointment of Catholic bishops
• The latest restrictions on the TLM in England and the United States
• “Catholic” politicians and abortion
• Bishop Athanasius Schneider on the SSPX controversy
The Catholic Identity Conference is a place for Catholics to discuss these issues and the future of the Traditional Catholic movement.
